Santa Fe Food Fare: Guy Fieri (and his Cool Hair) Stopped by Jambo
New Mexico Diner’s, Drive-ins and Dives
Food Network star Guy Fieri drove his sporty red Camaro convertible into Santa Fe once again for an episode of his hit show, “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” which recently aired, titled “Sammies and Stew.”
This time, he stopped at Jambo Cafe to help chef/owner, Ahmed Obo cook up some African dishes, including spice-rubbed mahi mahi cooked in banana leaves, and a Caribbean goat stew made with vegetables, potatoes and curry sauce.
Fieri also stopped in Albuquerque for a visit to Bocadillo’s, a restaurant that began when chef/co-owner Marie Yniguez started selling burritos out of the back of her car. She an Fieri join forces to make her Mexican twist on a turkey sandwich, known as the T&A for turkey and avocado, served with chile-apple chutney, muenster cheese, avocado and local heirloom tomatoes. They also made a Duke City Reuben, made with spiced corned beef, homemade sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing with chipotle and Swiss cheese. To top it off, they cooked up some giant biscuits with green chili gravy.
In “Aces of Authenticity,” a different episode that aired earlier this month, Fieri stopped in at Santa Fe’s Casa Chimayo and Albuquerque’s Torino’s @ Home, a restaurant devoted to the foods of northern Italy that used to be located in Santa Fe. Maxime and Daniela Bouneou made three dishes for the show—squid-ink black pasta served with calamari, fresh tomatoes and clam broth; beef cheek manicotti; and duck confit with white fagioli beans and an oven-roasted tomato.
And in Santa Fe, Fieri visited Casa Chimayo and learned how to make chicken enchiladas with chef Ernesto Guzman.
